British Values

British Values at New Heights School

At New Heights School, we actively promote British Values to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain. These values are embedded in our curriculum and daily life and help pupils understand the importance of mutual respect, tolerance, and being responsible citizens.

The Department for Education defines British Values as:

  1. Democracy
  2. The Rule of Law
  3. Individual Liberty
  4. Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

How We Promote British Values

1. Democracy

  • Pupils are encouraged to express their opinions and have their voices heard.
  • We hold discussions to encourage critical thinking and informed decision-making.

2. The Rule of Law

  • Pupils learn the importance of rules and laws, both within school and society.
  • We have clear behaviour policies and expectations.
  • Visits from the police and other community figures reinforce understanding of the law.
  • Pupils take part in activities that highlight the consequences of breaking rules and laws.

3. Individual Liberty

  • Pupils are encouraged to make choices in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Teaching focuses on rights, responsibilities, and personal freedoms.
  • Pupils learn about e-safety and how to make responsible choices online.

4. Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

  • Respect is a core part of our school ethos and behaviour policy.
  • We celebrate diversity through events, assemblies, and our curriculum.
  • Pupils are taught about different cultures, religions, and worldviews.
  • We promote an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Promoting Fundamental British Values as Part of SMSC Development

At New Heights School, promoting fundamental British values is a vital aspect of our responsibility to nurture pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development. This aligns with section 78 of the Education Act 2002, which mandates schools to develop pupils holistically.

Through SMSC development, we aim to:

  • Enable pupils to develop self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
  • Help pupils distinguish right from wrong while respecting English civil and criminal law.
  • Encourage pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour and understand their role in contributing positively to society.
  • Foster respect for democracy, public institutions, and services in England.
  • Promote tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions.
  • Instill an understanding of the importance of combating discrimination and valuing diversity.

Examples of British Values in Action

  • Assemblies on topics like fairness, justice, and tolerance.
  • Classroom discussions on current affairs and ethical issues.
  • Collaborative Learning Projects that promote teamwork, respect, and listening to different perspectives.

At New Heights School, we believe that promoting British Values helps nurture well-rounded, respectful, and responsible young people who are ready to contribute positively to society.
