Our careers programme

At New Heights KS4, we provide each of our students with an inclusive programme of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance. Our CEIAG programme includes:

  • Work inspiration days
  • Work placements (Year 11)
  • Meet the professional sessions
  • Targeted workshops aimed at specific cohorts interested in a specific sector
  • One-to-one interviews regarding post-16 destinations with Diane McConnell from the Post-16 Guidance Team
  • CV builder workshops
  • Mock interviews
  • Qualifying those students who require a CSCS card and applying for this
  • Visits to LCC campuses to see what college life is all about
  • Visits to higher education settings such as JMU and Edge Hill to see what university life is all about

Students also have access to careers information as part of their personal development during form time, PSHE and assemblies. In addition, students have access to Start Profile, a platform used to help students make well-informed choices when choosing their post-16 setting.

Each member of staff has a duty to input information onto Compass+, where they can evidence employer interactions, curriculum links and career guidance relevant to the Gatsby Benchmarks.

Looking ahead

Our vision

We guide our students to develop their aspirations, confidence and determination to progress with their chosen path. Students should leave New Heights KS4 with a host of robust employability skills alongside both core and vocational qualifications.

Individual guidance

Careers advice

Students will have the opportunity to meet with Diane McConnell, 16–19 Guidance Team, at key decision points in their school life. They can discuss their ideas for the future, explore the options for after they leave school and plan their next steps. Students can expect personalised and impartial advice and guidance.

Diane’s support continues during the six-week summer holidays and into transition points in September of the following academic year. Diane supports individuals by attending open evenings with students and parents or carers where necessary.

Pupils can request an interview with Diane by liaising directly with our Careers Lead, Mrs Wright.

Our allocated Post-16 Guidance Team adviser is Diane McConnell. Contact Diane at diane.McConnell@liverpool.gov.uk.

A year of progress

Summary of our 2025/26 Careers Programme

Our 2025/26 KS4 careers programme helped students in Years 10 and 11 develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed post-16 choices. Employer engagement, personalised guidance and curriculum-linked careers learning supported strong outcomes against the Gatsby Benchmarks.

100%

of Year 11 students had a clear post-16 pathway following at least one one-to-one careers interview with a qualified adviser.

  • Employer and industry engagementStudents took part in careers fairs led by South Liverpool Homes, involving local and national employers. Mock interviews and sector-specific learning were included in careers lessons within the PSHE curriculum.
  • Work experienceYear 11 students completed placements with Olsen and Olsen hairdressers, Your Tour Tourism, Zara’s Hub, Lux Installations Electrics and Zing Construction. Students reported increased confidence and a better understanding of workplace expectations.
  • Curriculum linksSubject teachers linked lessons to careers, helping students connect their learning with real-world applications and future opportunities.
  • Positive destinationsEarly tracking indicated a high proportion progressing to further education, apprenticeships or training, with minimal risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training).

Students demonstrated improved career readiness, stronger employability skills and greater awareness of different pathways. Feedback from pupils, parents and employers was overwhelmingly positive.
