Key Stage 2
Topic at New Heights – discovering the world, its people, and how we all fit together
Our Topic lessons bring a world of discovery into the classroom by linking subjects like history, science, geography, art, and more into one fascinating theme. Each term, our children explore a new topic, helping them understand how different areas of knowledge are connected to the world around them.
Topics are approached in an interdisciplinary way, where we focus on a central theme. Whether it’s exploring the wonders of the Ancient Egyptians, understanding the mysteries of Space, or investigating Our Changing World, each theme offers new opportunities for hands-on learning, creativity, and critical thinking.
Topic at New Heights: Broadening Horizons for Young Minds
At our school, Topic lessons inspire curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world. This engaging approach integrates subjects like Geography, History, British Values, World Religions, and Global Knowledge into meaningful learning.
This holistic approach helps develop critical thinking, empathy, and a well-rounded worldview, equipping children with the skills they need to thrive in an interconnected world. Our goal is to help children find their place within it and aspire to make a positive difference.
Topic is exploring
At New Heights, our Topic curriculum is built around several key principles to ensure a well-rounded education:
In KS2, we ensure that our Topic curriculum helps children progress in their knowledge and skills across subjects like History, Geography, and more. We use a mix of assessment strategies to support this development:
Feedback is given in a clear and constructive way, encouraging improvement. We provide verbal, written, and peer feedback, helping children understand their strengths and next steps. This approach supports progress, builds confidence, and fosters a love for learning.
Our Topic curriculum connects learning to the real world, helping children understand their place in it. By exploring history, geography, and cultures, they gain insights into how the past shapes the present and learn about the environment, people, and events that impact daily life.
This practical approach fosters problem-solving, critical thinking, and global awareness, helping children apply their knowledge to everyday challenges. It equips them to make informed decisions, appreciate diversity, and contribute positively to their community and the wider world.
