About Maths at New Heights Key Stage 2

At New Heights Primary, we are passionate about helping every child develop a strong foundation in mathematics. We use the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, carefully aligned with the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 (KS2). This ensures that our students not only meet the required objectives but also develop a deep understanding and love for mathematics.

Subject Content

The White Rose Maths scheme is a structured and progressive program that helps children build a solid understanding of mathematical concepts through clear and logical steps. It is designed to make learning maths engaging and accessible, encouraging children to problem-solve, think critically, and apply their mathematical knowledge in real-life situations.

In KS2, we cover the full range of mathematical topics set out in the National Curriculum, ensuring that children build upon their learning from Key Stage 1 and develop the skills necessary to thrive in secondary school and beyond. Our curriculum is divided into the following key areas:

  1. Number and Place Value
    • Understanding numbers and their value, including larger numbers.
    • Recognising the relationship between digits (thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones).
    • Comparing and ordering numbers, and rounding to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000.
  2. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division
    • Developing fluency with the four operations.
    • Solving multi-step problems using these operations and applying number facts.
    • Exploring efficient strategies for calculating, including long division and multiplication methods.
  3. Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
    • Understanding fractions, decimals, and percentages and how they are related.
    • Comparing, ordering, and simplifying fractions.
    • Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and solving problems involving them.
  4. Measurement
    • Exploring different units of measurement (length, mass, volume, time, and temperature).
    • Converting between units (e.g., metres to kilometres or grams to kilograms).
    • Solving real-life problems related to measurements.
  5. Geometry (Properties of Shapes)
    • Identifying and describing 2D and 3D shapes and their properties.
    • Understanding angles, symmetry, and the properties of different geometric shapes.
    • Solving problems involving position, direction, and movement (e.g., coordinates and translations).
  6. Geometry (Position and Direction)
    • Using coordinates to locate points on a grid.
    • Understanding translations, reflections, and rotations on a grid.
    • Exploring symmetry and transformations.
  7. Statistics
    • Collecting, representing, and interpreting data using bar charts, line graphs, and tables.
    • Understanding mean, median, mode, and range.
    • Solving problems based on statistical data and interpreting graphs.
  8. Algebra (for Year 6)
    • Exploring simple algebraic expressions, including number patterns and sequences.
    • Solving basic algebraic equations using previously learned skills.

Maths is limitless

Curriculum Principles

  • Mastery Approach: Every child is encouraged to fully understand each concept before moving on. Lessons build on prior knowledge to ensure no child is left behind.
  • Small Steps Learning: Complex topics are broken down into small, manageable steps, allowing students to progress at their own pace.
  • Problem-Solving and Reasoning: Students are encouraged to explore different methods to solve problems, strengthening both their mathematical and reasoning abilities.
  • Fluency and Practice: Consistent practice helps children develop fluency in all areas of mathematics, with regular assessments to support their progress.

At New Heights, we provide a dynamic and engaging maths curriculum that encourages children to think independently and solve problems with confidence. Our teaching methods include:

  • Interactive Lessons: We use resources like practical activities, interactive whiteboards, and digital tools to engage students.
  • Practical Application: Students apply their learning to real-life situations, helping them see the relevance of maths.
  • Differentiated Learning: All students are supported at their level, with extra challenges for those who excel and tailored support for those who need it.
  • Regular Assessment and Feedback: Teachers assess students’ progress through observations, quizzes, and end-of-unit tests to ensure all students are meeting their potential.

Assessment and Feedback

Our assessments ensure that students are progressing appropriately and meeting their potential. Teachers use:

  • Formative Assessments: Observations and quizzes during lessons.
  • End-of-Unit Tests: To check understanding and address any gaps in learning.
  • Regular Feedback: Teachers provide constructive feedback to encourage improvement and build confidence.

Links to Everyday Life

Mathematics is a vital skill used throughout life. At New Heights, we aim to foster a positive attitude towards maths, encouraging persistence and problem-solving. Key connections include:

  • Practical Problem-Solving: Children apply maths to everyday situations.
  • Career Skills: Maths skills are essential for a wide range of careers, from engineering to finance.
  • Critical Thinking: Maths helps children develop logical thinking and decision-making skills.

By following the White Rose Maths scheme and the National Curriculum, we ensure our students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for future academic success and equips them with essential life skills.
