The school uses RAPID Plus and Lexia to improve reading and comprehension levels and create a culture where reading is fun and pleasurable. There are daily opportunities to read both in English lessons and other lessons. Pupils have access to a reader in residence which gives them the opportunity to read and discuss many forms of literature.

The school provides a curriculum which includes subjects within the National Curriculum, with an emphasis on the development of literacy and numeracy to allow pupils to succeed in a wider curriculum while here or when they leave New Heights. The curriculum provides for the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the pupils and prepares them for the next phase in their life (e.g. return to mainstream, education or work placements, etc.) The delivery of this curriculum includes all staff of the school who work together to provide an enjoyable working environment seeking to develop the self-esteem and true potential in any young person. There is a culture of Restorative Practice which underpins the planning and delivery of the curriculum content.
